Artistic issues...

Soooo... I'm supposed to be coloring these refined pieces. But for some odd reason, the ones I started don't look very good to me. The people all seem lifeless.

Case in point:

He's supposed to be a warrior of sorts. His attire is based off of the Maasai. And yet, he didn't seem very... "aware" to me, I guess.

And she didn't seem to pop out to me either.

So, after some thinking, I attempted to redo the warrior in a different pose, this time more of a profile.

(Yes, his legs are uneven... d'oh! >_< )

And somehow, it still didn't strike me as coming across as being energetic.

So I tossed my pencils aside and grabbed some pens and just sat and doodled with them. And somehow, I felt more energy with the pens than I did with my pencils. I dunno why... I just do.

Started the rough sketch in red pen, and refined it a bit with black. The red pen was a bit too intense for the scanner and actually showed up a little while scanning in Black and White (it's not supposed to do that... argh). So, instead, I scanned in grayscale and this was the result.

I feel that it has more energy. And I had more fun doing it. It's not a piece that I'll definitely include in the project, though; it was just for practice. I'm debating the presence of the gray lines--a result of the red ink being scanned in grayscale.

So I might have to rethink my schedule a bit and go searching for some crappier red pens that won't show up on the scanner...

I kind of do agree with TJ here; they do all have definate style and all look nice, but I think that the last one is the best and does exude the most personality. None of them are bad, but I think you're right in pointing out the bottom one as seeming more alive than the rest.
