Artistic issues...

Soooo... I'm supposed to be coloring these refined pieces. But for some odd reason, the ones I started don't look very good to me. The people all seem lifeless.

Case in point:

He's supposed to be a warrior of sorts. His attire is based off of the Maasai. And yet, he didn't seem very... "aware" to me, I guess.

And she didn't seem to pop out to me either.

So, after some thinking, I attempted to redo the warrior in a different pose, this time more of a profile.

(Yes, his legs are uneven... d'oh! >_< )

And somehow, it still didn't strike me as coming across as being energetic.

So I tossed my pencils aside and grabbed some pens and just sat and doodled with them. And somehow, I felt more energy with the pens than I did with my pencils. I dunno why... I just do.

Started the rough sketch in red pen, and refined it a bit with black. The red pen was a bit too intense for the scanner and actually showed up a little while scanning in Black and White (it's not supposed to do that... argh). So, instead, I scanned in grayscale and this was the result.

I feel that it has more energy. And I had more fun doing it. It's not a piece that I'll definitely include in the project, though; it was just for practice. I'm debating the presence of the gray lines--a result of the red ink being scanned in grayscale.

So I might have to rethink my schedule a bit and go searching for some crappier red pens that won't show up on the scanner...

Early morning post: People sketches

A quick post before breakfast: started working on the people who inhabit the world of Project Shujaa.

A headdress that would be worn by a village woman.

This was based off of a sculpture I saw in one of the books. The concept of a person having small arms amused me, so I drew it. It amused Hector as well. He said he could imagine the guy running around screaming "MERT MERT MERT!"

These are based on Maasai clothing:

Finally, after a little thought, this sketch represents the style I would like the game to use for people. I think it would be fun to make the 3D models in a similar style.

It won't be long before I select a few of the best pieces, redraw them in a more refined manner, and color them. I can't wait :D

Books books books

I visited the library last night and checked out some books for reference. They mostly deal with African art, but one of them is photo documentation of the Maasai as well.

My friend Allie also loaned me a book called A History of Art in Africa. At this point, I have a lot of legitimate book references to work off of.

I'm also thinking of leaning towards a more stylized art style for actual human beings, and creating a world where non-humans aren't just enemies, but can mingle with natives. My inspiration for this was Final Fantasy 9, where you didn't just have humans, but dog-, penguin-, ox-, and bird-like people as well.
